Traditional Martial Arts, what were they, how were they taught?
In the ancient arts, the Chinese arts in particular, a student trained with a master until such time as the master selected him to become a disciple.
This was not a forgone conclusion. A master probley only chose, may be three or four during his lifetime to continue his lineage.
One of whom would be selected as the senior student and trained to a level to take over when the master passed on.
They would of been expected to train their mind to a high level, so that these disciples would be given wholelistic training.
On a equal level with the fighting arts, they would be expected to become proficient in medicine, composing poetry , be versed in the Chinese classics. Added to this would be artistic skills, calligraphy and painting. Chinese painting always have a poem at the side. Social skills and etiquette would also be needed.
The traditional master and his disciples would of been well rounded gentlemen of their time giving and receiving great respect to and from their contemporaries
